Projects

Our research projects deal with assessing Mediterranean fisheries and stock status, monitoring marine populations, promoting ecocentric fisheries management, studying marine mammal populations and their interactions with fisheries, modelling marine ecosystems and developing the digital twin of the ocean.

EU funding

SURIMI

(2024-2027)

SURIMI’s overall objective is to develop social-ecological models and user-friendly solutions that will be integrated in an interoperable and standardized manner within the DTO to generate policy analysis rooted in management strategy evaluation (MSE) principles.

EcoScope

EcoScope

(2021-2025)

The EcoScope Project aims to promote effective and efficient, ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management. EcoScope applies novel assessment methods for data-poor fisheries, including non-commercial species, as well as for biodiversity and the conservation status of protected megafauna.

Iliad

ILIAD

(2022-2025)

The Iliad Digital Twin of the Ocean, an EU funded project, builds on the assets resulting from two decades of investments in policies and infrastructures for the blue economy and aims at establishing an interoperable, data-intensive, and cost effective Digital Twin of the Ocean.

Odessea

ODYSSEA

(2017-2021)

ODYSSEA will develop, operate and demonstrate an interoperable and cost-effective platform that fully integrates networks of observing and forecasting systems across the Mediterranean basin, addressing both the open sea and the coastal zone.

Protomedea

(2015-2019)

The ultimate goal of the project was to design a Marine Protected Area (MPA) network in the study areas (Greece and Cyprus), taking into account the protection of ecological characteristics and Essential Fish Habitats (EFH), significant areas for fisheries, as well as their socio-economic impacts through a participatory bottom-up process.

DiscardLess

(2015-2019)

DiscardLess helps provide the knowledge, tools and technologies as well as the involvement of the stakeholders to achieve the gradual elimination of discarding. These will be integrated into Discard Mitigation Strategies (DMS) proposing cost-effective solutions at all stages of the seafood supply chain.

4 Alien

(2020-2023)

The project will focus on the biology and ecology of four alien (4 ALIEN) fish species and the effects of their expansion on fisheries, biodiversity and ecosystem services. Within the project and the mitigation measures to reduce the impact of alien species, a central point is to explore their commercial exploitation and consumption.

Octopus 1

(2023-2024)

The project aims to carry out research activities in the main fishing grounds of Octopus Vulgaris in the northern Aegean Sea.

Octopus 2

(2023)

The project aims to assess the stock of the common octopus in the North Aegean Sea by collecting additional data by field survey on small-scale coastal fishing vessels and combining the outcomes with the ones from the parallel relevant project.

Athos

(2021-2023)

The project aims to map habitats and marine fish populations in the Gulfs of Chalkidiki, northwestern Aegean Sea using underwater video systems and fish survey data.

InCa

(2020-2022)

The project aims to fill a gap that exists in estimating the economic loss of small scale fishers due to gear damage and catch loss by marine mammals and to estimate the rate of incidental catches of key marine megafauna species including marine mammals (cetaceans and monk seals), seabirds and marine reptiles, as well as elasmobranchs in Greece.

SSF

(2020-2022)

The project deals with the small scale fisheries in Cyclades, will assess their impact on fish stocks and propose management measures that will rebuild local fisheries.

FishFish

(2017-2020)

The project studied the marine populations in the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades and the characteristics and tactics of the local small-scale coastal fleets.

HellStocks

(2018-2020)

The project assessed the status of marine fisheries stocks in the Aegean Sea using novel methods and techniques.

ClimedFish

(2013-2014)

The project studied the effect of climate change and variability on the marine pelagic fish populations in the Mediterranean Sea and the NE Atlantic Ocean.
